Andy Thomas beat Jimmy Murphy by KO in round 4 of 10
- Date: 1922-05-12
- Location: Clermont Avenue Rink, Brooklyn, New York, USA
The semi-final last night resulted in one of the greatest slam-bang affairs ever witnessed in a Brooklyn ring, even if it did only go four rounds. Originally Andy Thomas, the socking Manhattan lightweight, was carded to meet Red Cap Wilson, but at the last minute Jimmy Murphy, of Greenwich Village, protégé of Maxey Haugh, was substituted for Wilson. For three rounds the substitute gave Thomas the battle of his life. Time and again Murphy staggered his opponent, but Thomas proved that besides packing a wallop he also has another trait of a real classy boy, the ability to stand up under punishment and come back stronger than ever. Thomas finally got the range on Murphy’s stomach in the fourth round and hard lefts and rights to Jimmy’s mid-section sapped all of his strength. Then Thomas put over one of his right-handers to the jaw and Murphy went to the floor. He was not unconscious, but was unable to regain his feet before the final count was completed.
