Battalino came out aggressively, and drove Payne around the ring in the opening round. In the 2nd round, Payne caught Battalino with a right hand to the jaw, that sent him to the canvas. Battalino rose at nine wobbly, and was reeling at the bell, when after it had rung Payne knocked him down again with a right hand. Battalino recovered after that, and was never in trouble again, though it was Payne's fight the rest of the way, though Battalino did win rounds, and fought better than he had in their previous Cincinnati meeting, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
