Wilson dropped Malone with a low blow in the 2nd round, and was warned in total three times for low blows. In the 6th round, a double left uppercut to the stomach put Malone down. Malone rose at the count of nine, but was holding his groin in agony, prompting a stoppage by the referee. The ringside physician examined Malone after the stoppage, and determine that the blow was not from a foul. Both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald felt the finishing blow was clean.
Malone appeared to be heading towards a points victory, at the time of the stoppage, according to both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald.
