Firpo was down for a nine-count in the 2nd round, from two rights to the head. After he rose, he covered up along the ropes, and was sent down again at the bell. Firpo asked for the bout to be stopped after the 2nd round, the referee who felt he wasn't hurt, refused. When Firpo didn't get up at the bell for round three, the referee began counting him out. Firpo left his corner with the count at seven, walked towards Stillman, and went down to Stillman's blows.
