Cascade Tunnel City was a two-year-old railroad camp of 1,500 people at the foot of a Cascade mountain, built while the Great Northern Railroad carved a long tunnel. It was called the "wickedest spot in the world" by the New York World, as quoted in the May 19, 1900 Tacoma Evening News.
