Sixto Escobar 121 lbs lost to Frankie Bove 124 lbs by PTS in round 8 of 8
- Date: 1939-07-25
- Location: Belmont Park, Garfield, New Jersey, USA
- Referee: Johnny King 2-4
The referee gave Bove the 1st, 2nd, 4th (on a foul), and the 7th round. Escobar was given the 6th and 8th rounds, while the 3rd and 5th were even. The Passaic Herald-News agreed with the verdict, scoring 5-2-1 for Bove. This result was considered a major upset, as Bove only had 10 professional bouts, and was a comparative novice to the reigning World bantamweight champion. Escobar let Bove steal the play from him in the opening rounds, using a stabbing left hand to keep Escobar off.
"Lou Brix, Escobar's manager admitted his champion had been beaten but not decisively enough to turn the decision against him. "He's not made for Bove's style," said Brix. "He doesn't like boxers. Nothing was the matter with him. He just waited too long. It's all right with us if they call them that way here." quote from the Passaic Herald-News
