Cocoa Kid beat Werther Arcelli by KO at 1:30 in round 2 of 10

  • Date: 1937-07-12
  • Location: Carlin's Park, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
  • Referee: Charley Baum

In the first round, neither fighter landed any significant punches, but they became more aggressive towards each other in the second round. At 1 minute and 30 seconds into the round, Cocoa knocked out Arcelli with a sharp right-hand uppercut to the chin. After Referee Charley Baum counted Arcelli out, the crowd reacted with boos, believing Arcelli had taken the easy way out. Attending physician Dr. M.T. Boss examined Arcelli both in the ring and the dressing room following the knockout. He reported to Stanley Scherr, the chairman of the State Boxing Commission, that Arcelli had been rendered unconscious by the punch. Convinced that the knockout was legitimate, the commission determined that no further investigation was necessary. [Baltimore Sun]
