Dempsey appeared to be outboxing Lowry in the early rounds, until a left hook to the jaw put Dempsey on his back for a nine-count in the 4th round. Dempsey didn't appear to be too hurt though, as he quickly dropped Lowry for nine with a right hand to the chin. Dempsey would hurt Lowry again at the end of the 4th round with a left hook to the jaw. Dempsey would win the next three rounds, but began to show fatigue in the 7th round. Lowry began to work Dempsey's body in the 8th round, and dropped him twice for nine-counts in the round. Dempsey had little left in the 9th round, and Lowry floored him again quickly with body punches.
