Scoring a knockdown in the first, Joe Giardello, 156, a Brooklynite fighting out of Philadelphia, went on to grab a close decision over Pierre Langlois, 155, France, in a busy ten. The bout had hardly got underway when Giardello connected with a left-right combination that dumped Langlois for an automatic eight. The Frenchman was several rounds recovering from that inauspicious start. He was coming on fast at the finish, gradually overhauling the fading Giardello, but his rally started too late. Both boys suffered gashed eyebrows, Langlois in the fifth and Giardello in the ninth.
