Jose Gonzalez 158 lbs beat Rubin Carter 160 lbs by TKO in round 6 of 10
- Date: 1963-03-30
- Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
- Referee: Petey Della
- Judge: Joe Armstrong
- Judge: Al Berl
- Rubin Carter has a very strong 2nd round, but suffers a cut over the right eye in the process.
- Rumored Carter suffered from a detached retina in his right eye from this bout with Gonzalez, and fought on despite the eye issues not having the eye problem addressed so as to continue his boxing career. A prison fight shortly after his incarceration in 1967 in which he was hit in the right eye made his right eye worse. Carter claimed a lack of immediate and proper medical care to address the eye in prison caused him permanent blindness in his right eye after an eventual operation which attempted (and failed) to correct his detached retina.[[1]]
