Nettlow outboxed and outfought Montgomery in the first three rounds. Montgomery caught up with the fast-moving Nettlow in the 4th round, and controlled all but the 8th round. Montgomery hurt Nettlow with a left hook to the jaw in the 9th round, as a tired Nettlow slipped to the canvas as they tangled. Nettlow was hurt again at the end of the 9th round by a right to the jaw. Nettlow sustained a badly swollen right eye in the bout, and was cut on his left brow.

All three officials gave Montgomery the last four rounds. Judge Knaresborough's scorecard, despite being even in rounds, favored Montgomery on the strength of the last rounds.
