Phil Kim, Hawaiian welterweight, scored a 10-round technical knockout over Virgil Akins of St. Louis last night in the main event of the nationally televised Rainbo arena boxing card. Only 603 attended the show and contributed to a gross gate of $1,241. Akins, who was leading on two of the threes official scoring cards thru the first nine rounds, was knocked down twice in the final round, both times with left hooks to the head. He went down for a four-count the first time, and then for nine, after which Referee Joey White stopped the bout at 2:11 when Akins was unable to raise his arms. Both fighters weighed 141 ½ pounds. Dr. Irving Slott, athletic commission physician at the ringside, administered oxygen to the groggy fighter, and later ordered George Gainford, Akins manager, to take his charge to the Columbus Memorial hospital as a cautionary measure. Dr. Slott said there did not appear to be anything wrong with Akins except for exhaustion. Akins was unmarked. Chicago Tribune
