This was a poor fight, according to the South Bend-Tribune, as both fighters were warned several times to give more of an exhibition. The referee accused both fighters of pulling their punches, which was disputed by Firpo's manager, who claimed that he couldn't hit Baker. Both boxers were down twice, though both of Baker's trips were after missed punches; while Firpo slipped in the 3rd round, and was down from a left for nine in the 8th round. The decision was well received.
