Tommy Bell 150 lbs beat Danny Martin 160 lbs by TKO at 0:35 in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1948-10-25
  • Location: Rhode Island Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island, USA
  • Referee: Sharkey Buonanno
  • Weights: Bell 150¼, Martin 160
  • "Martin was felled with smashes to the heart and jaw after Bell had led all the way. Ringsiders said Martin had suffered severe body and head punishment in the early rounds. A fire department squad used an inhalator in an effort to revive him before he was removed to the hospital, where his name was placed on the danger list. Martin was given the last rites of the Catholic church by a priest at the ringside." Tacoma News Tribune
  • Danny Martin survived his severe head injury in his fight against Tommy Bell on October 28, 1948. On December 22, 1948, the 22-year-old accepted a check and gifts from committee members who ran a smoker for his benefit. Martin, still showing the effects of severe head injuries, returned home immediately after the presentation. He advocated for thorough medical examinations every three months for all fighters and closer supervision of the sport by the commissions. "Providence Journal"
