Tommy Bell 151 lbs lost to Anton Raadik 160 lbs by TKO at 2:43 in round 9 of 10

  • Date: 1948-06-14
  • Location: Marigold Gardens Outdoor Arena, Chicago, Illinois, USA
  • Referee: Norm McGarrity

Anton Raadik, 160, pounded Tommy Bell, 151, into submission in the first major show of the outdoor season in Marigold Gardens last night, but it took him nine rounds to demonstrate his superiority. Referee Norm McGarity called a halt at 2:43 of the ninth, much to the displeasure of the overflow crowd of 5,233, which contributed a gross gate of $16,658. More conservative fans approved the official’s action. Bell, who had given Anton a hard struggle most of the way, was knocked through the ropes and onto the ring apron shortly after the last round started and appeared helpless after he regained his feet at the count of five. A left hook to the jaw floored Bell for a two count in the first, but he was given a compulsory eight toll. In the third, Bell scored with two hard lefts to the belt-line, and a right opened a cut on Raadik’s left eye. Thereafter, Raadik rallied to soften Bell for the finish.
