MUNDRABY MAGIC
By Tony Nobbs
It was fabulous to hear that Fred Mundraby won the vacant Australian Bantamweight Title in Townsville on June 23, stopping Leigh Lindgren in two rounds. Nor was it a surprise, having cornered Fred in March, with Mick Katsidis' trainer Brandon Wood. Fred's trainer Bob Burow could not make the trip. I was also there to corner Peter Kariuki winning the PABA and WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight Titles and what I saw that night from the unassuming little man was raw gold - outclassing plucky Matt Merideth to claim the State title on the undercard of Ganoy-Peden in Brisbane. It was my first meeting with the Yarrabah born Mundraby and my last words to him as I left that night were "Don't waste your talent". He looks to be on the right path and lets hope that now he wears the same belt Lionel Rose once wore with pride, this 19 year old has the dedication to take his tremendous talent all the way as he stands with William Kickett as potentially yet another rising Indigenous star.
