Virgil Akins 138 lbs beat Albert Adams 138 lbs by PTS in round 6 of 6

Virgil Akins, St. Louis’s outstanding amateur fighter during the past few years, will make his local pro debut against Albert Adams, Kansas City junior-welterweight, in a six-round match on Promoter Hans Bernstein’s boxing card Wednesday, March 10, at Kiel Auditorium. Akins won the local Golden Gloves titles in 1946 and 1947 and turned professional last November when he journeyed to Kansas City and fought under the name of “Jimmy Foxx.” He stopped John Gabels (Sidney Caples) in one round and beat Adams on points in a six-round match. Virgil has dropped the moniker of Jimmy Fox. His foe, Adams, has had about a dozen pro fights. St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis, Missouri March 2, 1948, Tuesday, Page 15. Clipped by Bob Yalen
