Virgil Akins 136 lbs lost to Charlie Baxter 133 lbs by TKO in round 3 of 6

  • Date: 1948-04-05
  • Location: Kiel Auditorium, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA
  • Referee: Paul Spica

Virgil Akins won on a foul for 10 minutes in a bristling battle with Charley Baxter of Cincinnati, but another commission decision reversed the verdict. Akins went down in the third round of a scheduled six from a left hook that appeared low. When he was unable to continue and seemed semi-paralyzed for several moments, Referee Paul Spic recommended the fight go to Virgil on a below-the-border clout. However, DR. Freedman said evidence showed Akins was not fouled. The commission then awarded Baxter a technical knockout. (Source: St. Louis Globe-Democrat. April 06, 1948)
