Virgil Akins 147 lbs lost to Andrew Brown 149 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1954-10-16
- Location: Coliseum Arena, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Andrew Brown, local welterweight, successfully hurdled his most important pro ring test Saturday night at the Coliseum when he gained a split decision over Virgil Akins of St. Louis in a 10-round slugfest. Brown piled up a commanding lead in the early rounds only to have Akins come on strong in the last three stanzas. In the toe-to-toe sessions the youthful New Orleans welter had the better of some fierce exchanges which brought a warning from the referee to Akins for alleged butting. In the seventh heat Brown sustained an eye cut. THE TIMES-PICAYUNE
