This decision was unpopular, according to the Asbury Park Press, who favored Overlin 6-2-2 in rounds. Overlin hit Peirce below the belt several times and was also warned four times for backhanded punches. Referee Brown was overheard telling writers that he was awarding Peirce rounds three and four for illegal punches. Overlin was better at long range in the bout, while Peirce was better in the infighting. Many of Overlin's blows did not land cleanly.
