Larkin got off to a slow start, allowing Cochrane to do the leading the first four rounds. Beginning in the 5th round, Larkin began to pile up points on the strength of his left hook to the body. Larkin appeared to grow stronger with every round, and staggered Cochrane with a right hand to the jaw in the 8th round.
Larkin's handlers insisted on the odd distance of nine-rounds, as they had never gone more than eight rounds before.
