Martinez outboxed Varona in the first four rounds, as Varona attempted to crowd the quicker Martinez. Before the end of the 5th round, Martinez landed a left hook, followed by a right hand that floored Varona for a five count, the bell ending the round while Varona was down. Varona fought back strongly and continued to try and crowd Martinez, who refused to trade. In the 10th round, Martinez decided to come inside and trade with Varona.

Varona was penalized two rounds, the 2nd and 5th round. Varoa finished the fight with a swollen right eye, and welts on his face.
