The match started slowly, with scarcely a blow landed in the opening round. Steele had an edge in the 2nd round and a slight edge in the 3rd round. Portillo, however got Steele along the ropes at the end of the 3rd, and had him on wobbly legs after a volley of punches. Steele tried to box Portillo, but Portillo threw and landed hard right hands in the 4th round, a fairly even round. Portillo took the 5th round, as he twice had Steele on the ropes where he gave him a belting. Steele came back in the 6th round with both hands, and twice stopped Portillo in his tracks. Portillo held his own in the slugging exchanges during the round.
