- Date: 1942-09-22
- Location: Wilmington Park, Wilmington, Delaware, USA
- Referee: Joe McGuigan
- Judge: Charlie Welsh
- Judge: Al Merritt
Previous to the fight Willie Ketchum, Jenkins’s manager, was quoted “I hear Tribuani is the rugged puncher, they say he is. Lew likes ‘em rugged. The more rugged the better. Lew just dotes on those guys. He doesn’t like the clever guys.”
Both fighters were pronounced physically fit by Dr. William V. Marshall, Delaware State Athletic Commission physician who examined them earlier in the day at the weigh-in (Sept 22, 1942). Members of the commission and about a hundred fans were present at the time. Tribuani’s manager was granted an out of state referee after an appeal to the Pennsylvania Boxing Commission. His other requests were denied.
According to Willie Ketchum, Jenkins’s plans were “pure” and somewhat “simple” a right to the chin and the counting of ten “simple arithmetic”. Tribuani’s plan according to his brother Ralph, who was also his manager was to keep Jenkins at range. “If he does what he’s told he won’t be running into that Jenkins right. I feel you won’t be able to tell how the fights gonna go until around the fourth or fifth round. That’s when I figure the tide will be swinging our way and away from Jenkins.”
According to Rock ‘n Sock “Al has been known to fight his own fights. Perhaps the Jenkins Camp is “hep” to the impetus nature of Al. Anyway, Jenkins needled Tribuani plenty when they were posing for pictures yesterday and at the weigh-in today.” Jenkins weighed in at 139 1/2 pounds, Tribuani weighed in at 147 3/4 pounds.
Jenkins stalked Tribuani in the first flickering his left and shooting his right. Tribuani boxing carefully kept out of range and managed to get in a few left handed shots as he felt out his more experienced opponent. Jenkins had the edge in the first.
In the second Tribuani piled off lefts and rights to the head and body to carry off the session.
In the third Jenkins was warned for butting and Tribuani went to work with a vengeance flooring Jenkins for an eight count. The bell rang immediately after Jenkins lifted himself from the floor.
In the fourth Jenkins was floored in his own corner and was up at a count of one. Afterwards he was hammered on the ropes until the bell sounded.
The action slowed in the fifth although Tribuani landed enough punches to carry off the session.
Jenkins managed to stay off of the floor in the six and seventh but continued taking a hammering from Tribuani who fought off all of Jenkins efforts.
Jenkins took a terrific beating in the eighth when an overhand right put him down for a nine count, then he got up he mauled in close and hammered away after the bell.
Jenkins took another hammering on the ropes in the ninth, taking a nine count and rising as the bell sounded.
The tenth was the worst of the night for Jenkins. Although Jenkins attempted to fight back Tribuani knocked him down for another nine count. With time fading Tribuani lashed out and knocked Lew down again. The count reached eight with Jenkins on the floor when the bell rang to end the bout.
A paid attendance was reported at approximately 6,500.
