According to the report of Joe Koizumi in The Ring, April 1987, Payakaroon struggled to make the weight limit, and tired as the bout progressed. Roman scored repeatedly with his left jab, and had Payakaroon's right eye closed in the later rounds. Payakaroon was holding on, and on the verge of being stopped in the 12th round.
