The News had Purvis winning. Purvis was cautious in the first three rounds, before opening up. Purvis gave Petrolle a beating in the 6th round, and outlanded him 2-to-1 in the second half of the bout.

The Star had Petrolle a clear winner, feeling he forced the issue in the bout, and made Purvis miss repeatedly. The Star felt Purvis made a good fight of it, and may have came out ahead, had he followed up many of his punches. Purvis' best rounds were the 2nd, 6th, and 10th.
