"Dwight Hawkins didn't score his usual knockout at Hollywood Legion Stadium, but he learned an awful lot while scoring a clear decision over rough-house Noel Humphries in the 10 round main event. Noel had a big advantage in height and reach, plus a few pounds in heft. Despite this edge, he refused to mix it with the deadly-punching Dwight, wrapping himself around Hawkins like an anaconda." -Ring Magazine, April 1959 issue
- Hawkins' manager, Jake Shugrue - complaining that all bantams had been avoiding his natural bantamweight, thus forcing him to fight featherweights - posted a $500 forfeit check with the California state Athletic Commission, challenging for the State bantamweight title. Hawkins was then nominated to fight for the vacant title in his very next fight.
