After a quiet first round, Campbell opened up the 2nd round by jarring Kirby. Kirby responded though by landing a right to the jaw of Campbell which floored for him for no count. Campbell rose shakily though, and according to the Los Angeles Times "took considerably the worse of the exchanges during the remainder of the round". Campbell finished the second round with his right eye completely closed. Campbell recovered in between rounds, and turned the fight around with rights and lefts to the heads, before landing a right to the jaw that floored Kirby for the count. Kirby's seconds were unable to bring him to for several minutes.
