Sporting editor Walter St. Denis of that newspaper wrote: "From the southwest corner of the ring at Madison Square Garden it looked as if Jack Britton outpointed Packey McFarland in their ten-round bout. From other positions around the roped enclosure the contest may have looked altogether different." It is likely that his decision was pre-arranged, as several persons, associated with Britton and his manager, Dan Morgan, attempted to induce McFarland to bet on who would be given the victory by certain newspaper (although the name of the newspaper was not disclosed by McFarland, but according to the New York Sun writer, the unnamed newspaper decided in favor of Britton, thus clearly implying that it was the Globe) when the boxers were weighing in at 3 P.M.
