Donnelly battered Calamari in the last two rounds, after he had a slight edge in the first eight rounds. The referee claimed that Calamari had told him to stop the fight saying "Don't hit me any more". Calamari, his manager, and Donnelly all denied hearing this. New Orleans Times-Picayune writer William Keefe, seated on press row, claimed that he had seen Calamari mouth something. Keefe did acknowledge that "It is hard to imagine a game youngster like Calamari asking for quarter after all the tough spots he has been in and the chances are Referee Moran and Donnelly both misunderstood whatever Calamari said."
