In a bout broadcast live over cable television sports networks in Europe and Russia, Zaurbek Baysangurov, a Russian fighting out of Kiev, Ukraine, defended his WBA Inter Continental Light Middleweight championship with a unanimous 12 round decision over Erosemele Albert, a Nigerian out of Miami, Florida. The bout was far closer than the scoring indicated, and featured 11 rounds of nonstop toe-to-toe action fought mostly on the inside. Both fighters spent the bout throwing right-left combinations. Baysangurov, 21-1 with 16 KOs, was by far the busier of the two fighters, landing more head shots, with Albert, a former Nigerian amateur champion, 22-3-1 with 10 KOs, countering alot and throwing more body combinations. Albert complained of a headbutt to his left eye in the fourth which appeared accidental. The left eye subsequently had a cut bleeding off the corner in later rounds, but it didn't appear to be caused by the butt. In the tenth, both fighters were warned for rabbit punching. Albert was also warned for holding and lost his mouthpiece late in the round and complained for a replacement, but the referee refused and Albert finished the round without it. The action was briefly stopped late in the eleventh after another accidental headbutt left Albert draped over the ring ropes, but he recovered and the bout continued. Baysangurov threw all of the punches in the twelfth and final round, as an arm weary Albert just 'hung on' though his legs were still good and the referee gave him every chance. Both fighters appeared in excellent condition and neither fighter was hurt during the twelve rounder.
