Brian Rose 154 lbs beat Jason Rushton 151 lbs by TKO at 2:59 in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 2009-10-23
  • Location: Bolton Arena, Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom
  • Referee: Steve Gray

In a BB of C Central Area vacant Light Middleweight title bout, Lancashire's unbeaten Brian Rose, now 14-0-1, 4 kos, stopped Jason Rushton with one second left in the tenth round, with the referee concerned that Rushton was taking a pounding on the ropes. Rushton was then immediately escorted to the dressing room by the ringside doctor, but collapsed in the dressing room and was immediately taken to the hospital, prompting the cancellation of the remainder of the scheduled fight card. Rushton remained in a drug-induced coma fighting for his life.

Promoter Frank Maloney said Rushton had suffered a bleed on the brain and had been operated on to relieve pressure on the brain. However, no blood clot was discovered. Rushton is expected to remain in the drug-induced coma for at least the next 24 hours before doctors decide the next course of action. The career of Doncaster Yorkshire's Rushton, 18-10, 3 kos, a loser of 7 of his last 8 bouts (after winning his first 13 bouts, and winning 17 of his first 20) appears to be over. Rushton had held the Central Area and British Masters title during his 28-bout career.

"Jason had walked back to the changing-room with the doctor before he collapsed," stated Robert Smith, General Secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control. "Doctors are monitoring Jason's condition. He is in a drug-induced coma, which is the normal procedure for this type of injury. They will know more in 24 hours or so."
