On a televised Telemundo fight card, longtime Lightweight and Light Welterweight contender Antonio Pitalua, age 39, a Columbian fighting out of Mexico City, won the vacant WBO Latino Welterweight Title with a fifth round stoppage over Wilfredo Negron of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. Pitalua fought a smart fight, overcoming height, reach and age disadvantage by going head to head with Negron at close quarters in center ring, mauling his opponent with power shots while leaning on him. Negron looked in shape, but had little offense, and when he did, his rare punches laced zip. While Pitalua missed alot, he kept moving forward, and his relentless head and body attack eventually wore Negron down by the end of round four. Midway through round five, Pitalua landed a big right uppercut with a weary Negron leaning on the ropes. Pitalua followed with left hooks to the body, and right hooks to the head, and the referee stopped the bout with the defenseless Negron 'ready to go'. Pitalua's record goes to 48-4 with 42 kos. Negron fell to 26-13-1 with 19 kos. Four months short of age 40, Pitalua won every round unmarked.
