In a bout televised on Telemundo, former welterweight and light middleweight contender Joel Julio, a Columbian fighting out of Miami, Florida, won a unanimous six round decision over Clarence 'Sonny Bono' Taylor of Wilmington, Delaware. The bout was much closer than the scoring indicated. Julio, 35-3 with 31 kos, came forward firing left and right jabs the whole night, while Taylor moved side-to-side and counterpunched highly effectively with right hand leads to Julio's head, frustrating Julio all night. Julio's best round was the second, when a couple of big right hands had Taylor holding on to survive the round. Taylor went down from a low blow thrown by Julio in the fourth, and went down again in his own corner in the sixth from a slip. Julio attempted to pick up the pace in the second half of the bout, but settled on scoring from a distance, as whenever he tried to move in on Taylor, Julio would get hit. Both fighters appeared in excellent condition and neither fighter was hurt during the six rounder. Although Taylor, 14-23-4, 7 kos, didn't win, he came to fight and gave a good accounting of himself. He was complimented by the referee for giving a good effort at the bout's conclusion. By far the most competitive bout of the evening on the Pitalua-Negron TV fight card.
