Kid McCoy was knocked out in the first round by "Billy" Steffers, in the match in Cleveland, Thursday night. One of the Akron young men who attended the fight said: "McCoy and Steffers were sparring on the side of the ring, when McCoy foolishly left his guard open. Steffers hit him a blow nearly on the point of the chin. McCoy went to the floor and was motionless until counted out. In 10 minutes after the fight he was all right again. McCoy seemed overconfident before the fight. I believe though, that he was knocked out by a chance blow." [Akron Evening News, May 11, 1894]
