Matthews decked Wilson with a straight left hand for an eight count in round one and threw jabs which bloodied both the nose and mouth of Wilson and covered the fighters in Wilson's blood for most of the bout. Wilson intentionally head butted Matthews in the third, but the butt was not called. Wilson came back in the second half of the fight, winning the fourth round and battling even in the sixth, keeping the bout close. Matthews won the fifth. The bout was fought in a small ring as the preliminary to the main event featuring Aaron Pryor Jr.. The original main event with Ossie Duran and Jerome Ellis was scratched when Ellis could not clear customs. At the time of this bout, Matthews was the principal sparring partner for Steve Cunningham for his bout with Troy Ross.
