The Louisville Courier-Journal described this as a disappointing fight. Not a damaging blow was landed, and most of the bout was spent in clinches and light tapping at close range. Fields did most of the fighting, and demonstrated he was the better boxer. The Courier-Journal gave Fields an edge in rounds of 4-2-2. Fields had demanded that Firpo weigh 155 pound for the bout, which Firpo failed to do. Referee Wilkerson attributed Firpo's listless condition to his weight struggles.
