Jose Reyes 138 lbs lost to Walter Estrada 134 lbs by SD in round 6 of 6

In a minor upset, Walter Estrada, a Columbian out of Miami, Florida, a lightweight veteran of fifty professional bouts, won a split decision over Jose Reyes, 23-8, 8 kayos, Vineland, New Jersey. Estrada, 37-13-1, 25 kayos, got a critical point in the first for a 10-8 round. Estrada hit Reyes with a left hook, Reyes fell backward and lost his balance, scored as a knockdown. Estrada then fought the rest of the bout in center ring, using height and reach advantage to frustrate Reyes. Estrada jabbed and held in rounds 1 and 2 and won them, also trying to work to the body and throw uppercuts. Reyes tried to get inside and counter on the taller opponent but was unable to do so. Estrada won round three, using reach advantage to land overhand lefts and rights and then hold. The bout turned dirty, with Estrada warned for repeated low blows, Reyes warned for repeatedly hitting off the break, and Estrada leaning with his head and trying to butt Reyes at every opportunity. Reyes was more aggressive and the round was close, however. In the fourth, Reyes was warned for hitting off the break again, but came forward as the aggressor, and threw more punches to win the round. Both fighters opened up and traded power shot bombs in center ring with no defense, gaining a roar from the crowd at ringside in the Trump Taj Mahal ballroom as the action heated up. Estrada began bleeding profusely from a cut on the bridge of the nose caused by a Reyes straight left, but the blood did not affect his vision. Reyes began landing more jabs and continued coming forward as the aggressor to win round five. In round six, Estrada was warned again for throwing low blows, but Estrada landed a powerful overhand left that nearly closed the swollen left eye of Reyes and sent him staggering backwards, winning the round. After the bout, ringside buzz wondered whether blood from the nose cut of Estrada would affect scoring the same way Basilio's closed eye did in the split decision rematch between Carmen Basilio and Ray Robinson half a century ago depending on how the judges saw it. Estrada wins a split, one judge 57-56 Estrada. Without Estrada's first round knockdown, this bout would have been a draw.
