Deroy Beaton 138 lbs lost to Chris Green 134 lbs by UD in round 4 of 4

In a four round lightweight war on the under card of Teon Kennedy versus Alex Becerra at Bally's in Atlantic City, Chris Green of Ashbury Park, New Jersey, outpointed a much taller Deroy Beaton of Tom River, New Jersey. Beaton, built like a pint sized version of Thomas Hearns, came forward and attempted to confuse Green by switching back and forth from the orthodox to the southpaw stance, throwing a lot of rights with dangerous intent. Neither fighter cut off the ring. Green moved side to side, not offering a consistent target. Beaton threw many punches, but was inaccurate and wild, missing with most of them. Green was very accurate with left and right jabs. Both fighters got tangled up with each other near end of round three, and Beaton tumbled down to the canvas, ruled no knockdown by referee David Franciosi. The bout was still close going into the fourth. Green, more aggressive overall in this bout, landed a number of power shots to win round four and the decision. Both fighters were in top condition, but Green appeared the better trained fighter. Green's usual fight weight was 130 pounds. According to Green's manager, Rich Stoltenborg, "We came up to 136 pounds because we thought this was a fight we could win. Beaton was wild, and wasn't landing punches." Green returned to fight at 130 pounds after this bout. Green, not bothered by his opponent's height advantage, explained "I had a lot of amateur experience. I always fought taller guys. As a pro, I just have to jab more to win with taller opponents like Beaton." In photo at right, Beaton does look like Thomas Hearns but lacked his talent versus Green.
