Elmer Vera 165 lbs lost to Abdellah Smith 165 lbs by TKO at 2:47 in round 2 of 4

In an opening bout between two debuting super middleweight fighters on a six fight card called 'Capitale Punishment II' held at Capitale in New York City's Chinatown, sponsored by Empire Sports and Entertainment, and Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing, on Friday night, October 22, 2010, Abdellah Smith of Jamaica, New York, was awarded a second round TKO over Elmer Vera of Queens, New York. The result could also have been a disqualification for Smith. In the first round, Smith mixed straight lefts and rights with threw wild haymakers. Most of the haymakers missed but a few landed. One big right hand haymaker staggered Vera midway through the first, who appeared to throw out his right shoulder or pull a muscle in the right shoulder after getting hit. The action was briefly stopped by the referee. After a rest period by the ref, Vera opted to continue, but appeared mostly unable to use the right hand to punch from that point on.

Once in the first, and a number of times in the second, Vera inexplicably turned his back to Smith after exchanges in center ring, at one point draping himself backwards over the ring ropes. This forced referee David Fields to intervene and get Vera to turn around and resume the action. After yet another exchange where Vera turned his back to Smith again, and Smith indicated he would fire legal blows around the back of the head to the front to end the show, referee David Fields waived an immediate halt to the action at 2:42. An amateurish Vera mugged and taunted Smith throughout, but Smith fought smartly and did not respond. Vera could have been seriously hurt-or much worse-if Smith had not fought like a gentleman and a true professional.
