The Enquirer scored the bout a draw, feeling that Ryan had an edge in the first half, while Shade had the advantage in the second half of the bout. The Enquirer described Shade as one of the fastest welterweights seen in Cincinnati.

The Post scored Shade as the winner, giving Shade rounds 1, 3, 5, 8; Ryan round 2, and the rest were called even. The Post felt neither man had a decisive edge in any round. Shade was effective with his left hand which he scored with repeatedly, while mixing in a right uppercut and body attack. Ryan landed many hard blows, but many of them were blocked. The Post reported that Ryan admitted after the bout that he had been defeated by Shade.
