The bout was largely even through the 5th round. In the 6th, Garland hit Felton with two right hands that put him down for a nine-count, and later in the round a left-right put him down at the bell with the count at eight, when the round ended. In the 7th round, Garland drove Felton through the ropes for another knockdown with a series of right hands. Felton stayed on top of his opponent in the 8th round, but was caught with a right to the head and another to the body, which sent him down for a 4th time. Felton got up unsteady, and was dropped for a fifth time by a light left hook to the body. The referee stopped the bout at this point, without counting.
