After Referee "Monkey" Muñoz stops the bout in round 10, Leal fell unconscious to the canvas. He was immediately taken to brain surgery at T-I hospital in Mèrida, where doctor Renè Herrera Morales saved his life by removing the pressure around his brain in the first successful surgery of this type in Latin America. Less than a week later, Leal had a similar operation after he fell from his bed.
