Payne knocked down Paglina in the first round with a long left for an eight-count. Paglina recovered though strongly and raised swelling on Payne's left cheek bone and drew blood from his mouth. Payne resumed control in the 4th round, staggering Paglina with a right hand to the jaw. Paglina went after Payne aggressively in the 5th round, perhaps motivated by low punches and hitting on the break by Payne, that was ignored. Paglina was hurt by a left hook in the 5th round, and tried to hang on, before a series of punches floored him. Paglina got up at nine in bad shape, and when he took another hard shot to the jaw, the referee intervened.
