Firpo scored the knockout with a vicious right to the chin, followed by a left as Thomas was sliding to the canvas. Firpo had completely outboxed and outclassed Thomas, prior to the knockout. Some ringsiders were of the opinion that Firpo tried to kick Thomas, as he lay on the floor. Firpo denied this, but Thomas' mother felt otherwise, and entered the ring and slapped Firpo.
