Shamone Alvarez 149 lbs lost to Doel Carrasquillo 149 lbs by TKO at 1:16 in round 5 of 8

  • Date: 2011-10-22
  • Location: Tropicana Hotel & Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA
  • Alvarez versus Carrasquillo

In the opening bout of a rescheduled five bout card promoted by Joe Deguardia's Star Boxing at Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, journeyman Doel Carrasquillo scored an upset fifth round stoppage of fading southpaw welterweight contender Shamone Alvarez. Carrasquillo is a fighter of limited style, but who possesses a wallop power punch. Carrasquillo walks forward slowly, takes a good shot, and cannot be knocked out. Fighters who have beaten him use the jab at a distance to score points, and remain moving and out of the range of the dangerous trial horse. 'Pretenders' and prospects who have lost to Carrasquillo have been caught standing in front of him and have gotten hit, going down and out.

    • In rounds one and two, Alvarez, thinking more along the lines of the losing record of Carrasquillo, stood in front of him and tried to slug it out in both rounds one and two. This strategy did not work, as Carrasquillo belted Alvarez to the canvas with power shots and staggered him round the ring when he did get up, 10-8 and 10-8 rounds for Carrasquillo in the first two rounds. Carrasquillo fought southpaw Alvarez as a southpaw. Carrasquillo fights orthodox fighters as an orthodox fighter.
    • In rounds three and four, Alvarez fought as the Alvarez of old, using left and right jabs effectively with reach advantage to win both rounds on points, making Carrasquillo swing and miss as Alvarez was out of range. Alvarez tied up of Carrsaquillo whenever the fighters got too close to each other, and seemed to have found his rhythm, 10-9 and 10-9 rounds for Alvarez in rounds three and four.
    • In round five, though, Alvarez, his confidence level increased, stood back in front of Carrasquillo and tried to slug it out, visually rocking Carrasquillo several times but with no physical effect. Cassaquillo, with Alvarez standing in front of him in range, used power shots with both hands again to belt Alvarez to the canvas. When Alvarez got up, his legs were gone, enabling the slow footed Carrasquillo to walk right up to the still dazed Alvarez and batter him senseless, forcing referee Lindsay Page to stop the contest at 1:16 on request of Alvarez' corner. Carrasquillo had also won the eight round fight on points (48-44 advantage) even if Alvarez had survived the round.
    • "I gave him every chance," noted Page. The trainer of Alvarez, Arnold Robbins, gave a specific account of why Alvarez lost the bout: "Which Shamone could have won easily in the old days, using his jab to get this guy out of here. The problem is Shamone has not been listening to me in the corner for the last three or four fights." Carrasquillo appeared in top condition, and Alvarez, a loser of five of his last seven bouts at this point after winning 19 bouts at the start of his career, did not look in top condition for this bout. Still, Alvarez appeared capable of his using his ring skills to win this bout, but appeared in round five to want to try to knock out Carrasquillo in front of the hometown Atlantic City crowd, a careless decision in light of what he had been through in rounds one and two. "Nobody respects me," noted Carrasquillo after the bout. "I wanted to show everyone I can fight on the next level."
