After a tame first round, Wallace dropped Payne with a right to the chin. Payne rose quickly at the count of two, but his legs were unsteady and he dropped again, ultimately rising at six. Payne staggered all over the ring upon rising, but Wallace was unable to finish him. After taking the 3rd to recover, Payne used a body attack to build up strength over the remainder of the battle. Both boxers cut each other from butts in the bout, with Wallace winding up cut over both eyes and his forehead. The decision was met with a mixed reception from the crowd, though the Louisville Courier-Journal noted that the opinion of press row was that Payne was the winner.
