The Los Angeles Times, felt Armstrong won six rounds, Fontaine four rounds. Fontaine sustained a cut on his forehead from an accidental clash of heads. Armrstong's right eye was puffed at the end of the bout.

The Los Angeles Daily News reported that Armstrong nearly floored Fontaine with a right to the jaw in the 2nd round, and went on to win the next two rounds by a wide margin. The Daily News favored Armstrong 6-2-2 in rounds, giving Armstrong rounds 2-4, 6-8, and Fontaine the 1st and 9th rounds.
