William Smiley of the Ogden Standard-Examiner reported the following: "My scorecard gave Armstrong six rounds, called the fourth and fifth even and gave Burke the first and the tenth. In the Armstrong rounds the margin was so close that a short left or right that brushed the whiskers of the colored battler without connecting spelled the difference between the fighters. The battling Burke came back in the tenth to capture the final round without question."
