Irvan Marbun versus Muhammad Afrizal Cotto Bout Indonesian KT/IBC Super Featherweight Title Bout
In an Indosiar private television title bout for Indonesian sports fans, Irvin Marbun won a twelve round decision over Afrizal Cotto (sometimes also referred to as Muhammad Afrizal or Muhammad Afrizal Cotto) in a Junior Lightweight bout. Afrizal, 30, a former PABA featherweight champion, was down in the third round, and appeared unable to defend himself during much of the bout though he did not go down again, losing the twelve round decision in a bout some observers thought could have been stopped earlier. Afrizal left the ring on his own power and appeared OK. Afrizal subsequently began vomiting one hour after the bout, hemmorrhaged, and was taken unconscious to Royal Hopital in Jakarta, later transferred to Christian University of Jakarta Hospital (UKI) in East Jakarta. Afrizal was engaged and was to have been married on April 15 following the bout.
Afrizal is the twenty eighth Indonesian boxer to die since 1948. The last fatality was in 2007. In 2002, the World Boxing Council banned Indonesian boxers from fighting in WBC-sanctioned bouts outside the country following a series of deaths in 2001. The ban was lifted in July 2002 on condition that Indonesia imposed safety rules and formed a commission to monitor matches.
